How-to Guide

Everything you post publicly on Home811 — your contractor profile, portfolio projects, and marketplace listings — is reviewed by our team before it goes live. You’ll see the status on your dashboard and get a notification when it’s approved.

Signing in

Click Sign in with Google at the top right. Home811 uses your Google account — there’s no separate password to remember. Your name and profile photo come from Google; you can add the rest once you’re in.

Set up your contractor profile

  1. Sign in, then open Dashboard from the account menu (top right).
  2. Fill in the Business profile form: business name, a short tagline, phone and email, address, business hours, and a bio describing what you do.
  3. Add a cover photo — this is the banner homeowners see first.
  4. Add at least one Specialty (e.g. Kitchen Remodeling, Roofing). Start typing and pick from the list, or type your own.
  5. Add the cities you cover under Serving Area, and any Licenses with a link to verify them.
  6. Click Save profile. Your profile goes into the review queue — the banner at the top of the dashboard shows “awaiting admin review.”
  7. Once approved, your profile is public and shows up in search. You’ll get a notification.

Update your profile later

  1. Go back to Dashboard.
  2. Change anything in the Business profile form — contact details, hours, bio, cover photo, specialties, service areas, licenses.
  3. Click Save changes.

Edits to an already-approved profile go live within about a minute — no re-review needed. If your profile was previously rejected, saving an edit puts it back in the review queue automatically.

Add a portfolio project

  1. On the dashboard, scroll to My projects and choose Create a new project.
  2. Give it a title and a short description of the work.
  3. Add photos (Choose photos) and/or video links — paste a YouTube or TikTok URL. Add a one-line caption for each item.
  4. Click submit. Each photo and video is reviewed individually before it appears in your public gallery.
  5. To add more media to an existing project later, open it and choose Add media. New items are reviewed; the ones already approved stay live.

Requesting pricing & contracts

When a homeowner wants a quote, the whole exchange — the project details, each contractor’s itemized price, and the final agreement — happens on Home811, in the message thread between the two of you. Nothing is binding until the homeowner accepts.

Homeowners: request pricing

  1. On a contractor’s profile, click Get pricing — or open Request pricing from the account menu.
  2. Describe the project: a title, the scope of work, your location, your timeline (or mark it flexible), and photos if you have them.
  3. Click Send to contractors and pick one or several. You can Send to more later.
  4. Each contractor you sent it to can reply with an itemized bid. Compare them on Request pricing, message any bidder with a question, and Accept or Reject each one.

Contractors: respond to a request

  1. New requests appear under Project requests on your dashboard.
  2. Open one and choose Submit a bid — a line-item list (description, quantity, unit price) with a live subtotal, tax, and total.
  3. The homeowner sees your bid as a card in the message thread, marked Awaiting response until they accept or reject it.

Sending a contract in a message thread

  1. In any conversation, a contractor clicks the Create contract button next to the message box and chooses New contract. It’s the same line-item builder, with your business name, phone, and address on it. Use Save as draft to finish it later and Resume draft from the same button.
  2. The contract posts as a card in the thread. The homeowner opens it and clicks Accept or Reject.
  3. An accepted contract is locked. To change it, either side clicks Request an update and the other clicks Agree to unlock; the contractor then edits and re-sends it.
  4. Either side can open a contract and click Print to print it or save a PDF copy for their own records.

After the work is done, the homeowner can leave a review on the contractor’s profile, and the contractor can reply to it — see Notifications for how you’re alerted along the way.

Post on the marketplace

Anyone signed in — contractor or homeowner — can sell surplus materials, tools, and equipment.

  1. Go to Marketplace and click + Create new listing (or open My listings from the menu).
  2. Fill in: title, category, condition, price, your city and state, and a description.
  3. Add at least one photo.
  4. Click Submit listing. An admin reviews it before it goes live.
  5. Manage listings from the My listings column on the left — click one to edit its details and photos, or View listing to mark it sold or delete it.

Buyers reach you through Contact Seller, which opens an in-app message thread. You’ll get a notification for each new message.

Post in groups

  1. Open Groups and either Join an existing group or click Create a group (name, description, city and state, and a cover photo or color).
  2. Inside a group, type in the “Write something…” box, attach a photo if you like, and click Post.
  3. Comment on other posts, and reply to comments.

When someone comments on a post you started or joined, you’ll get a notification. Group posts aren’t part of the admin review queue — they appear immediately to group members.

Add Home811 to your phone

Adding Home811 to your home screen gives you a one-tap icon like a regular app — and, importantly, it’s what lets your phone show you a notification the moment a homeowner messages you or leaves a review, even when your browser is closed. On iPhone, notifications only work after you’ve added the site to your home screen.

iPhone / iPad (Safari)

  1. Open Home811 in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button (the square with an up arrow) at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
  4. Open Home811 from the new icon, go to Settings, and turn on notifications.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Open Home811 in Chrome.
  2. Tap the menu (top right).
  3. Tap Add to Home screen (or Install app), then confirm.
  4. Open it from the icon and turn on notifications in Settings.

Notifications

The bell icon at the top right shows new reviews, replies, messages, and approval decisions. Turn on browser notifications in Settings to be alerted even when Home811 isn’t open — on a phone, add Home811 to your home screen first (see above).
